Why stump work in Twin Falls is not the same everywhere in town

This is lava country. Basalt sits under the whole area and in places it is only a foot or two down, especially closer to the canyon rim. A grinder wheel that meets rock stops, and carbide teeth do not survive an argument with basalt.

What that means in practice: we grind to the depth the ground allows and we tell you what that depth is before we start. On deep soil out in the newer neighborhoods we can go a foot or more below grade with no trouble. On a rocky lot near the rim, we may reach rock at eight inches. That is still plenty for sod or grass seed. It is not always enough to plant a new tree in the exact same hole, and we will say so rather than let you find out in the spring.

Old irrigated ground brings a second issue. Trees watered by canal and sprinkler build wide, shallow root plates, so the roots you can feel running under the lawn are often the size of your forearm. Grinding just the visible stump leaves those in place to settle and sink for years. Chasing them out is part of the job.

How we grind

• Utility locate first. Before a wheel touches ground we get the underground lines marked. Gas, power, cable, irrigation. This is free and it is not optional.
• Clear the collar. Rock, wire, and old fence posts around a stump destroy teeth and turn into projectiles. We dig the debris out of the root flare by hand first.
• Grind the stump below grade. Deep enough for whatever you plan to do on top of it.
• Chase the surface roots. The ones running out under the lawn get ground down too, so you do not get a ridge across the yard in two years.
• Backfill and clean up. Grindings go back in the hole, crowned slightly because the pile settles. Excess hauled off or left in a heap if you want it for beds. Lawn raked and blown.

Access, and what a small gate costs you

The size of machine we can get into your yard drives the price more than the stump does. A big self-propelled grinder walks through a wide gate and eats a thirty-inch stump in under an hour. A thirty-six-inch gate on an older property between Shoshone and Harrison means a narrow machine and a much longer afternoon.

Measure your narrowest gate opening before you call and tell us the number. It changes the quote and it saves us both a wasted trip.

What happens to the hole

Grindings are mostly air. Whatever we backfill will settle four to six inches over the first season, so we mound it. If you want to lay sod or seed right away, tell us and we will haul the grindings off and you bring in topsoil instead. Wood chips and grass seed do not get along.

If you are planting a replacement tree, do not put it in the exact spot. Move it two or three feet and dig fresh soil. The ground fungi breaking down all that buried wood will pull nitrogen away from a new root system for years. Whatever you plant, it is worth having someone shape the replacement tree early while the cuts are small.

Suckers, and why a ground stump is not always dead

Some species do not accept defeat. Siberian elm, Russian olive, cottonwood, poplar and black locust all send shoots up from roots left in the ground, sometimes ten feet away in the lawn. Grinding the stump does not stop that on its own. Mowing the shoots off as they appear starves the root system over a season or two, and that is usually enough. We will tell you if your species is one of the stubborn ones.

Pricing and scheduling

Price is based on diameter measured across the stump at ground level, plus access, plus how rocky the ground is likely to be. We do stump-only jobs all the time, so you do not need to have hired us for the tree. If we did take the tree down, the grinding usually happens after the tree comes down on a separate visit once the crew has the site clear.
